"Look, they act like flotation devices!!" My mother burst into a fit of giggles as she took her first dip in the private pool of our gorgeous Tuscan villa. My husband, parents and I were in Tuscany to celebrate my mother's recent victory in her battle with breast cancer. She had been brave and remained positive throughout the harrowing ordeal and the removal of both of her breasts. Although the scars were healing, and to the outside world she looked no different, she was still getting used to her new body. It had been a grueling year, and on a bright morning, under the Tuscan sun, my mother was finally feeling carefree and at ease. The fresh air, the serenity at the villa, the sunshine, and maybe the Chianti were all helping her heal. She was radiant and although we were nestled in the hills of wine country, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees, her wide smile was the most beautiful thing I could see.
